Lesson 2/Choreographic Devices

Today we started by revisiting the phrases choreographed last week. These were combined with another person’s phrase which created our duets. We were then given a sheet of choreographic devices which included: cannon, contrast and repetition. We were tasked to identify as many of these devices in our dance and in so doing we recognised that they were not particularly obvious. Our task was to take 4 choreographic devices, and make then more prominent in our dance; we chose contrast, unison, embellishment and inversion.  This had a positive impact on our choreography and resulted in movements flowing together with dynamic and extreme moments highlighted.  This made the piece far more exciting!

Our next task was to create a solo inspired by our zodiac signs – incorporating both positive and negative qualities.  As a Scorpio I expressed ‘extreme’ and ‘complicated’ by the use of sharp and complex hand gestures.  To express ‘charm’ and ‘independence’ I used turns and jumps. I believe this worked well as it showed speed and height to portray a sense of freedom. This deeply contrasted with the slow movement and slight scowl which represented ‘arrogance’. The long line at the end combined with the direct eye contact with the camera showed ‘suspicion’ and ‘mystery’. I thoroughly enjoyed experimenting and developing this piece.  I chose more negative qualities because I felt they did not reflect me at all.  For example instead of being ‘suspicious’ I feel I am trusting.  I liked expressing these because it felt like I was finding a stronger, more assertive side to me. I also had to include at least 4 choreographic devices which were: contrast (pausing and then sudden rapid movements), climax (jumping), argumentation (long, wide arm movements and backbend)  and embellishment (head rolls).  I would like to develop more embellishment and precision in my dancing, together with stronger head movements.  However I am happy with the outcome and enjoyed experimenting with character.

  1. This is not a bad start to your week 2 post!

Please title as Week 2- Choreographic Devices

Please think about the following points:
    - More detail on the various choreographic devices we looked at during class is needed. (you could insert photos of the hand-out to illustrate this).
    - What is the purpose of integrating choreographic devices and the exercise set in class?
    - Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
    - Which choreographic devices did you use and why?
    - What was the purpose of performing these tasks in front of the rest of the class?

What you have written about your zodiac task is good.

    Think about:
    - What movements did you use to portray certain qualities/ emotions and why?
    - Do you think the purpose of the movement successfully came across to the audience?
    - How did the allowance of more time affect the final product of your phrase?
    - Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
    - Were you successful with the task set?

Please remember to link your videos in your writing, so as a reader there is a clear connection.

This is a very good piece of writing, well done!

  2. Your motif was very interesting and really showed the intention of the task as I could see your interpretations of the different traits! What strengths/weaknesses did you have within this task? How will you overcome the weaknesses?
