Shape Solo Task:

At the start of today's class we reviewed our notes on Justin Peck's "In the Countenance of Kings" dance video. I found that by sharing our thoughts together it developed my understanding of the structure, story and the aims of the piece which brought new ideas to mind. I did find it interesting how everybody had a different perspective on the dance! After this, we continued to watch another Justin Peck video, however this time it was on how he choreographs his pieces and developed his ideas.
After watching this video, we came to understand that a major part in his process of choreographing is sketching out the structure and formulations on paper as well as listening to the music hundreds of times. We used the sketching method as inspiration for our own solos. We passed a sheet of paper around the class and drew a shape/squiggle. Using this sheet, we created movements that illustrated these shapes. There were many different ways to interpret the shapes we had drawn: it could be seen as a map, an aerial view or even shapes created side-ways on.
I decided to use a mixture of different ways to portray six of the shapes. This I found quite challenging however once I got going the ideas smoothly came to mind. I did find creating different shapes with the body quite fun and enjoyable. I do feel that doing original tasks like this is a great way to propel me to seek creative movements which widens my movement vocabulary.
Overall, I am relatively happy with what I managed to create though next time I think I should include more traveling steps since it was slightly stationary. However, I am content that I used a variety of height.

The fluidity in your movements on the floor allowed me to visualize the circular shapes. I also liked your starting position as it allowed you to create a smooth, almost snake like movements as you stood up.
