Lesson 4/Solo Tasks Review

In the last 4 weeks we have had three tasks set: creating a solo inspired by our Zodiac qualities; another solo inspired by shapes; and an improvisation with the stimuli of rain drops on a window. With each task I feel I have responded with a determination and focus as I have really tried to get a clear vision and a true sense of what I have had to represent.

Whilst I choreographed my Zodiac solo, I really tried to embody the qualities I had to portray. I repetitively thought: what movements give a sense of mystery, complication and extreme behaviour? How can I make them look stronger and more dynamic? Similarly, for the rain drop improvisation I really focused on making sure every step flowed into the other with ease. I understood there had to be a continuous flow as well as fast and sudden movements, just like when two rain drops form together.

Of all the tasks I found the shape solo the most tricky. It proved to be quite complex to make each shape readable to the audience as I felt there was not an obvious display of each movement because they had to be linked together. However, it did become gradually easier to find more ideas and after seeing the finished product on video I do feel I have met the starting objective – to include 5 shapes in different ways with various parts of my body.

I particularly enjoyed the improvisation. I felt I managed to imitate the rain drop by using height, slow and fast movements and making a consistent flow through my body. I enjoyed having a degree of freedom to move in different ways as well moving together with others to create an illusion of wholeness. I believe that my improvisation of water droplets would be obvious to an audience because of the fluid movements I used consistently.

In conclusion, these tasks have developed my understanding on how a stimulus can deeply sculpture the way we portray movement as well as how we move our bodies to illustrate certain emotions and themes. The tasks have made me form my own ideas choreographically since they have taught me the importance of performance, using choreographic devices to make the dances more engaging and exciting and the emphasis of fluidity in the transitions from one movement to another.

In class today, we did a large amount of improvisation. Our task was to embody a raindrop. We were encouraged to isolate certain body parts, for example an elbow, to try and create different and interesting movements. As well as this, Miss Norman decided the energy levels through out the improvisation-changing from low energy, medium and high. This was a challenging task as I had to change the type and level of movement consistently. We then had to start combining our improvisation with others, linking and moving as one. This represented the joining of two or more raindrops. I felt this was the most challenging part of the task as I had to start thinking about others as well as myself. I definetly learnt about the constant connection you need to succesfully make the partnered movements look smooth and together.

  1. This blog post is very clear for the audience to read due to the use of paragraphs, well done. What do you think your strength and weaknesses were for the rain improvisation? How did you overcome your weakness in order to excel in this task?

    1. I think one of my strengths in the raindrop improvisation was that I was able to create a continuous flow of movement. I feel that I manipulated my arms well in a way that suggested and represented the fluidity of water. However, I do feel one of my weaknesses was applying the sudden highly energised movements to represent the joining of two raindrops. To overcome this, I really tried to make an obvious contrast in the movements that represented power and energy and the smoother grounded movements.

  2. I really enjoy your style of writing, as a reader I find it really captivating and refreshing to read. As you found the shape task the most challenging, how would you do it differently if you were to try it again now?

    1. If I were to repeat the task again, for each shape I would focus on one particular body part that influences the movement. Previously, I feel that I became restricted with the same leading arm or leg while trying to choreograph. Using this method, it will allow original and abstract movements to develop more smoothly.

  3. Good use of paragraphs within your writing, it makes your blog well structured and easy to read. Which creative task was your favorite? And which creative task could you see yourself using when coming to your choreography?

    1. I definitely think that the zodiac solo task was my favourite. I enjoyed following the guidelines when portraying my character and in particular found it interesting to consider whether I suppress some of these qualities. It was a little like the freedom you might feel when wearing a mask! I also liked experimenting with movements to express these qualities. I think I will use adjectives to inspire movements in my own choreography as I felt I worked very well. The words and the connotations they imply flowed through my head and guided my movements.

  4. Excellent work! Reflecting back to the task, please go into detail discussing what we did during the lesson, your thoughts towards the video’s we watched, how the creative task (rain concept) related to the practitioner, etc.
