  1. This is a really good vlog, well done Louisa. You come across as confident, due to the way you look directly at the camera and also speak clearly. I like you way you have discussed the ways Crystal Pite has impacted on the dance industry. You have also mentioned the ways she has impacted on the community, and you have discussed this in great detail. But is there anything Crystal Pite has done to have an impact on the dance industry culturally?

    2. I believe that Crystal Pite is part of a group of well know choreographers, like Wayne McGregor and Justin Peck, who are testing the boundaries of dance. They have changed traditional classical ballet by inserting a neoclassical style into the work of many successful ballet companies for example the Royal Ballet. They have impacted the dance industry culturally because they are disconnecting the stereotypical views of dancers by removing the typical classical costumes, set roles and the typical male and female stereotypes.

  2. This is a very good blog Louisa, well done. You have used in depth research to support each point you have given as well as discussing your own thoughts and opinions. You mentioned that Crystal Pite believes that art can't effect change. Do you agree with this opinion and if so why?

    1. I personally do agree with Crystal Pite that dance cannot physically effect change. It can raise awareness on topics, open new ideas, thoughts and conversations. On the other hand, by bringing our attention to change that is needed, it could somehow influence people who have the power to act upon these issues if the public pressurise them enough. However, organisations that do in fact aid change do not need the help of dance productions but instead need to communicate with a wider audience to gather support and donations.

  3. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your vlog, I like the way you have gone into such detail throughout. I wondered whether you believe that more choreographers should join Pite in touching on relevant topics and impact the community through their pieces?

    1. I think there are many different purposes behind choreographers’ work: some dance is for pure entertainment. There is no political comment in the Nutcracker Suite and an audience does not go to a production to have thought provoked. However, there is certainly a place for dance to touch on relevant topics, as can any other art form.
When, however, a current issue can be expressed with the emotion and freedom that dance can bring, then the result is very powerful. It is often a way of conveying a personal story – the real impact that an experience can have on individuals, not just government and policy. Expressing this on stage, could impact the community to try and engage and help in any form they can, be it donations to certain charities or voluntary work.

  4. This is a very detailed and confident vlog in which I really enjoyed watching. Well done Louisa.
I can clearly see that you have gone into a lot of research based around your chosen practitioner and there impacts. You also portray your own feelings and thoughts throughout this vlog around Pite and her impacts.
In this vlog you mentioned that you researched that Pite wanted the audience to connect with their own bodies to the dancer, do you feel when watching her pieces you personally connect with your body?
    This was an excellent vlog

    1. I do feel empowered when watching Crystal Pite’s choreography. After doing the research and dance reviews I have a better understanding of the reaction she tries to provoke. I now appreciate her intentions, and the deep thought behind every move. I feel inspired every time I watch her work.

  5. This is a very clear and thorough vlog, well done!
I want to know why you chose Pite as your main practitioner from the beginning and how her movement style relates to yours in any way?

    2. I chose to focus on Crystal Pite after watching her work with dancers in the studio. I saw how she projects joy and energy into everything she does. I love how she always strives for the best and have heard her frequently say in interviews that she wants to push the dancers to their limits.

I do feel that my movement style has been influenced by Pite’s ideas. Prior to researching Pite, I did not seem to include a wide variety of energy levels and expression in my movements, particularly in improvisation. However, after studying Pite’s work in greater detail I have a greater appreciation of how to make my choreography engaging – even with simple movements. I now really enjoy using sharp, crisp and precise movements. Pite includes this genre of movement a great deal in her work and I feel by trying to use this in my own dancing it has made my movements more powerful. I have seen how she repeats movements but changes their dynamic through subtle, small differences in e.g. arm shape or head movement. I have focused particularly on this aspect in my own solo and feel it has made my movements far more exciting and unpredictable.
