After reviewing the learning outcomes and my stated aims, I feel I have managed to meet all my intended criteria. I believe I have been guided through my choreography process by the vast amount of research, set tasks and experimenting with movement inspired by my chosen choreographer over these last few weeks. After performing my finished solo to Miss Norman today I feel delighted with the outcome and believe I have met one of my most important criteria: to touch and connect with the audience emotionally.
I feel that not many changes or additions to my choreography are needed. However, there is one change I will pursue and this is the walking at the very end. After the studio performance I was able to watch the video that was taken while I performed and I agree with Miss Norman that the small walks lack purpose and intention. I therefore have been experimenting with how to make them more ambitious and intense. By striding backwards with my head tilted and with direct eye focus towards the audience, I will avoid turning my back on the audience. I can then curve round the studio and continue walking forwards to my ending position.
I received feedback from my peers in Creative Session 1, 2 and 3. One thought-provoking comment I received in creative session 1 was, "How do you hope to explore conflict through your piece?" Crystal Pite projects emotion into her pieces by using conflict. I have focused on doing the same and this comment reminded me to keep searching for the movements that reflect and express external and internal conflict. I definitely feel without the feedback I have received from my peers and tutor I would not have noticed certain features that needed to be changed or have had the motivation to dig deeper and find more expression to add to my piece. For example I would not have included the audio addition of a ticking clock at the end (to represent the waiting game of dementia) if I hadn't been pushed to consider further development and research from comments I have received.
My Grandma has been my motivation whilst choreographing this piece. I feel I have a duty to provide the respect she deserves every time I dance my solo as this is the story of how her life ended. I feel dementia is an illness that may impact us all either directly or indirectly and is something which we all need to be aware of. I therefore put maximum effort into every movement, and thoughts of my Grandma generate the emotion which has powered my movements.
I really enjoyed reading your blog about this lesson. You have explored your strengths and weaknesses thoroughly and the positive reaction you have given to the feedback on your piece.
ReplyDeleteCould you include the criteria overall of the choreography assessment?
Thank you, the criteria I have evaluated over these last few weeks are: critically analysing and evaluating a variety of works by my chosen choreographer; demonstrating the application of theories, processes, devices and technical dance skills to choreograph, create and design an original dance to my pre selected stimuli; and finally, to critically evaluate and reflect on personal choreographic work and the creative processes I have used.
DeleteThis is a really good blog post. I like how you have linked back to a previous comment in a blog and discussed this point in detail. I also like how your are using personal experience for motivation as well allowing this to bring out emotions. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your solo in class, and I feel as if you have presented your chosen stimulus and narrative very effectively.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog Louisa as well as watching you perform your piece in your studio performance, it was amazing! In your blog, you spoke about Crystal Pite’s use of emotion in her pieces, why do you think this is so important?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI believe the most important aspect in a performance is how the dancers connect to the audience, how they project feelings and leave the viewers feeling inspired by what they have observed. I am convinced that this is through the use of emotion a dancer and choreographer expresses through their work. I believe one of the many reasons why Crystal Pite is an incredibly successful choreographer is because she can secure this kind of connection with her audience. This has motivated me to really focus on bringing emotion to my piece and made me consider how I can interact and develop a similar reaction as Crystal Pite does with my audience.
How did the Studio Performance create an impact on your creative process?
ReplyDeleteConsider the brief and the learning outcomes for your choreography module, do you think you have you met all the criteria required?
his is a well-considered post and I feel you have shown a clear understanding of the topic, I feel the work you have produced so far is possibly around the 2:1 criteria. If you are looking to progress to a 1:1, it will be worth considering the quality of your reflective skills, research, ability to answer the questions and critical thinking. By demonstrating the ability to develop plans of action and integrating received knowledge of practitioner-based processes with evidence of varied personal research as well as critically reflecting your process (showing awareness of own strengths, weaknesses, and developing ability to compare alternative theories and analytical approaches) and considering possibilities, and their consequences to develop appropriate actions, it will offer new questions for your consideration and may help you identify areas you might not have considered with within your project. Can you ensure you have evidence of these areas within your work.

How did the Studio Performance create an impact on your creative process?
DeleteThe studio performance allowed me to better understand: how I will project to my audience; my spatial awareness; and how the meaning of certain movements can get lost in a large studio. This impacted my creative process because I had to change the ending of my solo to match the intensity of the rest of my dance because the walking I had included lacked purpose. I am now able to concentrate on smaller details, for example facial expressions, which need to be emphasised to achieve emotional connection.
The studio performance has also brought attention to my strengths and weaknesses. I feel I the acting and story-telling of my solo is a strength and I now need to focus on the technical accuracy.
Consider the brief and the learning outcomes for your choreography module, do you think you have you met all the criteria required?
I feel I have successfully met the brief, learning outcomes and criteria required for this assessment. Throughout the weeks, I have consistently reviewed my written work and dance movements to make sure I am following all the criteria I set at the start of the module. This has in fact helped me hugely whilst creating dance material because it has pushed me to find more ways of expressing: the factors I stated in my research, choreographic devices in my work and a variety of choreographic process inspired by my chosen choreographer.
The learning outcomes are listed in the following:
-critically analyse and evaluate a variety of works by a chosen choreographer within the current dance scene.
-Demonstrate the application of theories, processes, devices and technical dance skills to choreograph, create and design original dance to pre-selected stimuli.
-Critically evaluate and reflection on personal chorographic work and the creative process used.
I believe I have managed to complete all the set requirements for each section of the learning outcomes as well as the brief.
Well done! In this blog you have made it clear how you will respond to the feedback given by Miss Norman. I loved watching your solo in class and it is really good to see that you have acknowledged feedback from your peers.
